Metro becomes 'World's Largest Global Newspaper'

Posted by Jean Yves Chainon on November 15, 2006 at 10:41 AM

Metro has been officially declared the ‘World’s Largest Global Newspaper’ by Guinness World Records. Metro is both the world’s largest and fastest growing newspaper.
70 editions of the free daily are published in 100 major cities, in 21 countries, and 19 languages, across Europe, North America and Asia.

Despite its continuous growth, the eleven year-old free newspaper remains in the red (net debt of $19.2 million as of September 30th).
Free daily newspapers have enjoyed untamed success internationally. A year ago, they passed the mark of 20 million distributed copies and were read by an estimated 40 million people.

Wow! Those are huge numbers for a hand out. I wonder though, what the impact of this amount of freesheet consumption will have on journalism? Or is the impact already being felt. Not to mention the environmental impact. After usage of recylced material it takes 400,000 trees per day to feed the London freesheets alone!
