Zimbabwe: purely online newspaper to launch

Posted by Elena Perotti on October 23, 2006 at 3:49 PM

As of this week, the African nation Zimbabwe will have a website dedicated to its coverage. Journalists from Zimbabwe, South Africa, Great Britain and USA will contribute articles to the Internet-only publication Zimbabwe Times.com.

The launch was announced by founder and managing editor Geoffrey Nyarota, who used to write for the now banned Daily News.

Nyarota, now based in the USA, explained that the Zimbabwe government has been increasingly repressing press freedom, and that the population is “starved of meaningful information”.

A team of international professionals is ready to report for the news site: “quality, fairness, independence, public and national interest, as well as relevance will be the keystone of editorial policy”.

The Zimbabwe Times will feature a column dedicated to all “political parties and independent politicians”, where they will be allowed to express their opinion and to answer questions from readers.
