U.S.: Miami Herald Publisher quit earlier than believed

Posted by Elena Perotti on October 6, 2006 at 3:57 PM

The Miami Herald reported yesterday that the resignation of its publisher Jesus Diaz Jr., announced last Tuesday, had already happened two weeks prior. According to the paper Diaz resigned as a consequence to a fight he had 16 days ago with columnist Carl Hiaasen over the opportunity of publishing one of the editor’s articles.

Hiaansen had written a piece described as “a sarcastic essay”, while covering the story of three journalists from el Nuevo Herald being paid by U.S. government-run broadcasts in order to promote democracy in Cuba. Diaz opposed the column, and Hiaasen threatened to quit if the article went unpublished. Shortly after the uproar Howard Weaver, top news executive of McClatchy Co. -  The Miami Herald new owner - called the paper to support the columnist. The column was published the day after.

McClatchy’s vice president of operations Frank Whittaker told the Herald that Diaz was requested not to announce his resignation until his successor was found. On Tuesday General Manager David Landsberg was appointed successor of Diaz.
