Iraq: fewer journalists embedded with military
The number of embedded journalists touring with US units in Iraq has recently dropped to below two dozen. The lowering trend began already a year ago, and does not seem to be affected by the recent rise of victims among American troops.
Some journalists blame this situation on the embedding program itself, which makes it extremely difficult for a reporter to be accepted by military commanders. Furthermore, once embedded, journalists can be sent back without appeal should their coverage of a story be found inappropriate.
On the other hand flying commercially and hiring a security team is not really an alternative, due to the high cost.
In March 2003 more than 600 media professionals were reporting alongside US and British forces.
