Iran: new daily suspended after two days

Posted by Elena Perotti on October 24, 2006 at 11:42 AM

The Iran government suspended the new moderate daily Rouzegar on its third day of publication for resembling the newspaper Shargh, banned last month. Iran press law 'immediately bans publication of a newspaper that replaces a banned one with similar name, logo, and format.'

Rozegar originally had a 24-page color format much alike Shargh’s, and many of its editors came from the newsroom of the closed paper.

The culture ministry ordered Rouzegar to change format and to remove political news, the coverage of which is supposedly not allowed by the daily’s license. With the requested changes made, Rozegar appeared again on the news stands three days after its initial ban.
