New York Times article unavailable to British clicks

Posted by Elena Perotti on August 29, 2006 at 6:22 PM

Internet users in the UK are currently unable to access an article on the New York Times' website due to some legalities. The article entitled "Details Emerge in British Terror Case" is now inaccessible in Britain because of a "British law (prohibiting) publication of prejudicial information about the defendants prior to trial," which is the message that greets British users who click on the Times' headline.

In order to block British users from reading the article, the Times tweaked its Web advertising technology which discerns the Internet address of users in order to deliver targeted marketing.

Print editions of the Times were also withheld over the weekend. “It’s never a happy choice to deny any reader a story,” said Jill Abramson, a managing editor at The Times. “But this was preferable to not having it on the Web at all.”
