No Facebook for News Corp. but more web 2.0 sites in vision
News Corp. is in the market for acquiring next-generation Web companies that could be integrated into its increasingly popular social networking site MySpace.
"I'm intrigued by some of these start-ups in the Web 2.0 space. They don't cost an arm and a leg, but they have no business model," said Ross Levinsohn, president of Fox Interactive Media, told a Bank of America investor conference.
In the market for technologies or tools that will help them integrate and participate in new media, News Corp. is looking to advanced Internet capabilities like those seen on sites like Flickr or YouTube.
But problems of MySpace’s content and the endless possibilities of online predators have created a controversy that might turn News Corp.’s investment into a financial nightmare.
As many advertisers have become nervous, Rob Norman, of WPP, an advertising giant says “A marketing boss reads a newspaper article about how fashionable it is and says ‘oh my God we've got to be there’, then reads another article that scares the living daylights out of him and the company pulls the campaign and beats up its media buyer for ever putting them on it.”
MediaPost, an online trade journal for media buyers, claims some advertisers are already avoiding MySpace. It would be a big blow for News Corporation if lots of advertisers boycotted it. The firm spent $580m to buy MySpace.
While MySpace is currently undergoing security changes to try to ease the publics concern over safety, News Corp. is finding other ways to make profits besides advertising. By enabling transactions between members and adding subscription offers, News Corp. hopes to add more than more Web 2.0 sites to MySpace.
Uninterested in Facebook, the next logical purchase in the realm of social netweorking sites, the company said it was because the site cost too much. Facebook, the smaller version of MySpace is intended to network colleges and high schools around the United States (currently integrating schools outside the country as well).
"We're certainly not paying $2 billion for Facebook," Levinsohn said. "If the price was right I'd be interested in it. It's a great site and I know the guys there well. But I don't know if they're up for sale."
A spokeswoman for Facebook denied the report and said the company had not put itself up for sale.
