Posted by Anna-Maria Mende on April 5, 2006 at 10:19 AM

German newspaper Die Welt, published by Axel Springer, celebrates its 60th birthday this week. The first issue of Die Welt appeared on 2nd April 1946 under the control of the British military government. The paper started with a print run of 160,000 copies, had 6 pages and the price was 20 pennies. The first editor in chief was Hans Zehrer. In 1953 publisher Axel Springer took over the newspaper.

In 1975 the paper moved its editorial office to Bonn, capital of the Federal Republic of Germany. In 1993 the paper moved to Berlin, capital of the united Germany. In 1998 the newspaper was redesigned and the newsrooms of Die Welt and the Berlin tabloid Berliner Morgenpost, also published by Axel Springer, merged. In 2004 the tabloid Welt Kompakt was introduced to attract new readers.

Current editor in chief of Die Welt is Roger Köppel. The circulation of Die Welt and Welt Kompakt is now about 251,000 copies (IVW statistics from 4th quarter 2005, the circulation statistics are only published for the two papers together). According to Axel Springer, the two papers have a combined readership of about 610,000 daily readers.
