Al-Jazeera to launch international TV channel
Al-Jazeera International is in the works to launch a new English-language news service by the summer. The service is still undergoing technical tests on what managing director Nigel Parsons said is going to be “the most complicated broadcasting operation ever.”
If the tests prove successful, the service will broadcast to between 70 million and 100 million homes worldwide, said Mr. Parsons. The channel is set to have four newsgathering and production centers around the world in Doha, Kuala Lumpur, London and Washington.
Set to broadcast a mix of hourly news bulletins and longer reports, mostly showing "the ugly side of war," each report will fit the appropriate international time zone with an estimated 65% of its coverage to be live news, said Mr.Parsons.
"We are opposed to sanitizing war," he said. "Anything we do show along those lines would come with a health warning."
Mr. Parsons said that one of the new channel's objectives will be to put the US under greater scrutiny. "Western news programmes have items called 'Focus on the Middle East' or 'Eye on China' but we think it would be a good idea to run that focus into America," he added.
Al-Jazeera is funded by the Emir of the Persian Gulf stat of Qatar and is currently negotiating with some platform operators to offer the channel via broadband internet.
The new channel has already hired Sir David Frost, Rageh Omaar and Riz Khan, formerly of CNN, as well as other journalists from Sky, ITN and elsewhere.
