Muslims oppose Arabic film about Jesus

In news not directly related to the world of the press, but rather to the aftermath of the Mohammed cartoon clash (for full coverage see previous postings in sources), Muslims in Egypt and elsewhere are opposed to plans for a possible first ever film about Jesus Christ in Arabic.

Abdel Moti Bayumi of Egypt's Al Azhar Academy of Islamic Studies argues that it is forbidden to portray prophets and that for this reason the film could only be made if it did not portray the image os Jesus Christ.

Orthodox Christian filmmaker Fayez Ghali, the author of the film in question, asserts that despite the opposition expressed, his film will be made. He has stated: "That the depiction of the prophets is forbidden is an issue for our Muslim brothers, not for me ... No human being ought to prohibit the movie, whether it's Al Azhar, the church or even the state." The dispute over the making of this film shows that religious tension is still salient and that many Muslims are unprepared to back down over their belief that images of prophets are unacceptable.
