Germany: 50 % of Frankfurter Rundschau for sale

Posted by Anna-Maria Mende on March 9, 2006 at 2:22 PM

Parts of the German daily newspaper Frankfurter Rundschau are for sale now. Jens Berendsen, manager of media holding DDVG, which currently owns the Frankfurter Rundschau, said in the Süddeutsche Zeitung that the paper plans to sell 50% of its shares. The media holding DDVG, which belongs to the German Social Democratic Party SPD, became owner of the Frankfurter Rundschau some years ago because the paper was in a crisis (see also former posting). To resell a major part of the paper later on was already planned at that time.

Berendsen also said that there are several publishers interested in buying the shares, both from Germany and from abroad. In every case the shares will not be sold to investors such as the British David Montgomery, who recently bought the Berliner Verlag and the Hamburger Morgenpost in Germany (see former posting).
