UK's Daily Mail to launch Irish edition

Posted by Dominique Lewis Tuohy on January 17, 2006 at 10:29 AM

The Daily Mail, Front PageUK tabloid The Daily Mail, second largest circulation of a national daily, is set to launch an Irish edition next month. A small team of Daily Mail staff will be moving to Dublin to launch the operation, which will be headed by Ted Verity, editor in chief of Ireland on Sunday, an Associated Newspapers paper.

The Irish Daily Mail will compete with Tony O'Reilly's daily The Irish Independent, available at newsstands in either broadsheet or tabloid version, which sells 170 000 copies, making it the Irish paper with the highest circulation. Other competitors are nationally sold daily tabloids The Irish Daily Sun (118 000 copies sold daily), The Irish Daily Star (100 000 copies sold daily) and The Irish Daily Mirror (80 000 copies sold daily).

Broadsheets The Irish Times and The Irish Examiner sell 115 000 and 55 000 copies daily respectively.

The launch of The Irish edition of The Daily Mirror is an attempt to boost the paper's sales in Ireland; the British edition already sells 10 500 copies there daily.

Media analysts have predicted a potential daily sales figure of 40 000 for the new Irish Daily Mail.

The newspaper market in Ireland is still lucrative, and advertising is still a profitable business for papers, as they receive 50% of the country's advertising revenue, compared to 20% in the UK.

I ordered part one of their Spanish course using their premium number and one month later I am still waiting for the CD. My emails have been ignored. Is this how the Irish Daily Mail is funding their operation or can I expect to receive my CD soon?

I am writing in connection of the Royal Dulton glassware on which I collected the correct amount of tokens and I haven’t heard any thing about them since.

On June 21st 2006 I enclosed a postal money order for 13.99 and the correct amount of tokens for the Royal Dulton glassware offer. I just haven’t heard anything about them, it has been five months without a reply or confirmation of my money and tokens.

I would like if you would let me know when I will receive my glasses.

I really think this looks like an innovative product. It will certainly start the other companies on a game of catch up. The 5 hour battery life has got to go though. It better have a built in AC adapter with that kind of life.

Nice phone! However, there's nothing innovative or new about panning and zooming around a Web site. It's been done - a lot - and it doesn't work. It's not a comfortable way to use the Web and it doesn't work from the Web sites either (ads are almost always "below the fold"). But I dig the high res screen.
