UK: Northcliffe Newspapers for sale
The UK's Daily Mail and General Trust (DGMT) is determined to sell its regional press group Northcliffe Newspapers, publisher of over 100 regional papers across the UK, for a price tag of approximately 1.5 billion pounds sterling. Northcliffe is the largest publisher of regional dailies in the UK.
Journalists' Reaction
Journalists at Northcliffe's Western Daily Press and Evening Post in Bristol yesterday passed a vote of no confidence in managing diector Michael Pelosi in reponse to both the sale announcement and the announcement of job cuts that preceeded it. The journalists, in conjuction with the National Union of Journalists (NUJ), also revealed plans to hold a ballott on industrial action next week, and to stage a protest outside the papers' office on December 6th. The general secretary of the NUJ, Jeremy Dear will participate in the protest.
The journalists have asserted that the annouced job cuts which were part of Northcliffe's Aim Higher programme, an initiative aimed at saving money and running a better "news gathering operation", were a "farce." Derek Brooks said: "The NUJ said from the outset that the cost-cutting exercise was all about boosting the share price of the company. We were right."
Northcliffe's journalists stated that they hoped they might fare better under a new employer: "We fervently hope that any new employer will have a greater commitment to regional journalism than the present board."
Who will Buy?
Speculation over who will buy the UK regional press group has indicated a number of candidates, including Trinity Mirror, Johnston Press and Newsquest. Buying Northcliffe might be problematic for all three of these groups, however, since they might contravene competiton policy by ending up controlling over 25% of the market share. Furthermore, Newsquest is owned by American group Gannet and the current situation in the US media market would suggest it might not be a purchase candidiate.
Chris Tryhorn suggests that what is more likely than a media group purchase “is a bid from a private equity buyer, or a consortium of venture capitalists. They would probably end up selling the company piece by piece for a profit.” Such an eventuality would most likely not be the result Northcliffe's journalists are hoping for.
Tryhorn also proposes the possibility that a television company "could see potential in hooking its embryonic local TV service into a network of regional newspapers." and want to buy Northcliffe. Commentators have already highlighted the potential success a local newspaper and television team effort could have with consumers. (see previous posting)
Trend?
Does DMGT's bid to sell Northcliffe represent the latest event in a trend where regional newspaper groups are sold off because of a choice to succumb to the demands of shareholders preoccupied with falling stock prices resulting from a general decrease in newspaper circulation and advertising revenue? One need only look at the example of US group Knight Ridder. (see previous posting)
