Chinese researcher for New York Times faces a potential 10 years in prison
Zhao Yan, who worked in The New York Times' Beijing bureau, has been indicted for "revealing state secrets" and for fraud. Mr. Yan's has been in prison without trial for 15 months, his lawyer has said the indictment means the trial will most likely begin within the next six weeks.
The charges made against Yan are linked to an article he wrote on 7, September 2004 in which it was revealed that former Chinese President Jiang Zemin was poised to offer up his resignation as head of the armed forces. The New York Times comments that in China "The ruling Communist Party is acutely sensitive to any reporting on the secretive inner-workings of top leaders."
Zhao Yan has denied the charges made against him. If he is convicted he faces up to ten years in prison.
The New York Times supports Yan, named journalist of the year by the press freedom organisation Reporters Without Borders, and has issued the following statement from executive editor Bill Keller: "For Zhao Yan's colleagues, family and friends, this is deeply disheartening … We've seen no evidence whatsoever that he is guilty of anything but honest journalism."
The New York Times has also pointed out that Zhao Yan is not the only journalist who has been targeted by the law in China: "Mr. Zhao's arrest is part of a broader media crackdown in China. In April, a Chinese newspaper reporter, Shi Tao, was sentenced to 10 years after being convicted of giving state secrets to foreigners."
The Times' sister paper The International Herald Tribune has taken a strong stance on the recent developments in Zhao Yan's case: "The accusation of providing state secrets to foreigners is the vague catchall that leaders invoke after reports surface of some business they want to keep quiet. In this case, a Times article forecast the retirement of China's leader, Jiang Zemin, from his last official post."
