Czech Republic: first paperless newspaper

Posted by Alexandra Zeumer on November 2, 2005 at 3:07 PM
Launched on November 1, the Czech Republic's newest daily focuses on the country's growing Internet users, publishing exclusively online. The paperless newspaper, entitled Aktualne.cz, will be put out by Centrum.cz which is the largest Czech Web portal on the market in terms of visitors.

At the origin of the project is Roman Gallo, a former editor in chief of the daily newspaper Hospordarske noviny. He has been collecting a staff of experienced and well-known journalists that will help make aktualne.cz the first domestic Internet news server that produces original reporting.

One of the "paper"'s main strengths is that it will post news at a very rapid pace.

Centrum.cz and aktualne.cz will also be producing original audio and video news for webcasts, and consequently will be fueling competition within the television market.

Even though media buyers maintain that the Internet has huge potential in regards to broadcasting news, other newspapers such as the daily newspaper Blesk have said that they do not plan to enter the market of e-media owners.

Centrum.cz's move can be compared to what the popular Internet company Yahoo! has been doing, adding original content to its various online functions.

I do most of my reading on a computer screen, a desktop or a laptop. Unwieldy and far from ideal. The Belgian newspaper experiment is using devices that are pretty big and unwieldy, too (see the complete article at Tech M&C).
