Judith Miller discusses resignation with New York Times
A change in tune of the New York Times management has led to resignation negotiations with its reporter, Judith Miller. The Times' editor, Bill Keller, and publisher, Arthur Sulzbeger Jr., who had given their complete backing to Miller in her fight to protect the identities of an anonymous source, have both stated publicly that they regret not having investigated her reporting more thoroughly.
It seems that Ms. Miller misled her editors on several occasions concerning the C.I.A. leak case presently engrossing Washington. This revelation led to one Times' op-ed columnist and the public editor writing pieces against her returning to work at the Times.
Miller, who spent nearly three months in jail and who some had hailed as a First Amendment crusader, described herself as Ms. Run Amok, meaning that she felt she could do whatever she wanted.
Much of her reporting on the lead up to the Iraq War, which many feel played a role in the Bush administration's justification, was later debunked and was followed by a series of corrections by the Times.
The present negotiations reportedly involve a severance package.
