Respected Chief Minister, Dr. Y.S.R.Reddy,

I have been an NRI for the last 30 years and have been frequently visiting my home country and pass through the Immigration and Customs of Hyderabad Airport.

I wish to bring some of the problems faced at the airport for your urgent attention.

When NRIs land after a stressful travel, they look forward to meeting their relatives and enjoy a holiday. Same is the case with foreigners, be it Americans, British, German or whatever, who also look forward to meeting their business friends and attend to urgent meetings with IT and other associates in Cyberabad. What they get to see is a different story.

Immigration counters: At the present airport, there are 12-14 counters for receiving the passengers. Sometimes two or three aircraft land bring in 700-1000 passengers. Most of the 12-14 counters are vacant. The maximum number of counters I have seen over the years have been four. These four staff also are very uncooperative, inefficient and look lazy and wear crumpled and dirty uniforms. The image projected by these disgruntled and unhappy looking staff is really bad for NRIs as well as foreigners.

The job of these people is to verify the Landing forms and compare them with the Passport and stamp the passport with date of arrival. This job is done very slowly. The rubber stamps are of low quality and cheap and do not show the date of arrival clearly.

The landing form also is badly designed with the signature of arriving passengers at the wrong place resulting in every passenger confused whether to sign the form or not. It looks as if only the foreigners have to sign the form whereas all passengers including Indians have to sign the form.

It is very important to place staff of presentable and positive personality at all the counters. We have thousands of Immigration Department staff who are least productive. They must be placed in the Airport and instructed to show very positive attitude and make the foreigners as will as NRIs feel welcome to Hyderabad.

The difficulties faced by 1000 passengers at four counters with crying babies, suffering old people and pregnant passengers is really too much to bear. The queues are not organised properly with people jumping from one lien to the other and liens merging from two to one. It is very simple and not very costly to buy separating ropes and stands and bring some order to Hyderabad Airport.

It is not acceptable that a new Airport at Shamshabad is coming up and everything will be all right. Everything WILL NOT be all right unless we take positive steps at the old airport and ask everybody to bring higher standards to the new airport. The new airport will also have the same lazy staff, the same undermanned counters, the same rubber stamps, the same ill-designed landing forms.

Is it the fate of Hyderabad airport to maintain the same bad standards.

What happens to the numerous visits of AP Ministers, Political leaders and Mayors to all the foreign countries to survey how they work, Is there not a single lesson to be learnt from all the foreign travels. When will Indian feel proud to come back and show the visiting foreigners that we are a proud state with an international standard airport.

Can all the Ministers and Leaders visit the arrival counters without their security and PAs to see the real situation. If they go with large train of followers, the staff will present a different picture and clean up the whole scene.

Customs : All the arriving passengers have top pass through the Customs check. The narrow passage where every passenger tries to push his trolley is always jammed. I can not imagine why some more Customs officers are deployed to receive the Custom tabs from the passengers and make the passage very broad. When one passengers has to back up due to some problem, the jammed line is a huge obstacle to pull out the trolley. Some basic design steps need to be taken urgently.

I am sure the same situation will continue at the new airport if urgent steps are not taken at the old airport first.

Baggage: To service any number of aircraft and any number of passengers, there are only two baggage lines. There should be at least four lines for ease of passengers. The lines are always crowded and pulling badly maintained trolleys is difficult. The trolleys need to be maintained and repaired regularly and new trolleys should be purchased in greater numbers.

The average time spent to retrieve the baggage is from one to two hours which is too much to bear for the tired passengers and women and old people.

Outside airport:

There is always chaos outside the airport. The pathways are uneven and pushing the trolleys is difficult. The crowds of receiving passengers, taxi and auto drivers, beggars is overwhelming. There should be more order in this area. Seating should be provided for the people. Beggars should be discouraged as they pester mostly the foreigners bring in further bad name to Hyderabad right at the doorsteps of the airport.

The traffic movement for all vehicles at the airport is also chaotic. My enquiries reveal that the main culprit is the provision of VIP Parking area which has taken up space where vehicles could pass through easily. I am not sure this is the only reason. But it is important that the traffic is properly regulated.

The new airport might have many roads and many parking spaces but it the attitude towards cleanliness, efficiency and discipline that will bring relief to passengers and respect to the image of the city.

Conclusion:

Government and the press must be getting hundreds of complaints and feedback from the suffering public. Some action might have been taken but temporarily. Most likely reason for continuance of the problems will be that the new airport will solve everything. This may not be true.

I request the authorities to solve the situation right now and continue to maintain the highest efficiency standards at the new airport. The image of Hyderabad city and the AP state is eroding on a daily basis. Are we capable of taking the issues seriously and addressing them?
