South Africa: classical style tabloid making headway
An interesting article from IOL hints at the bright future for a new South African tabloid, the Daily Voice, catering to a specific audience. A tabloid published through the classical sense of the term, with content dominated by scandal and sex, the Daily Voice is a far cry from the newly issued tabloid-size compact formats of the British Times or Independent. But with only three weeks under its belt, the Daily Voice already seems to be establishing a good name for itself amongst its mostly blue color-working readership. As the newest addition to South Africa’s booming tabloid market, executive editor Karl Brophy attributes the success of the first few weeks in publishing to the paper's catering to a socio-economic class not previously targeted by South Africa’s newspapers. Though few advertisements currently appear in the paper, Brophy expects advertisers to soon catch on the Daily Voice’s potential. Brophy also hopes to expand the current daily printing number of 100,000 to 200,000 within the next three years.
